The Power of the Subconscious Mind

A large part of the coaching work I guide clients through is helping them reprogram the limiting beliefs in their subconscious mind. I first started learning about the subconscious by watching videos by Dr. Bruce Lipton and Dr. Joe Dispenza.

Once I understood how powerful the subconscious mind is and that is controls 90-95% of a person’s life I became obsessed! I spent a lot of my free time learning about it, how it works and how it can influence lasting change in a person’s life.

This graphic highlights what consists in the conscious and subconscious mind and what percentage controls our day to day life.

So firstly, what is the subconscious mind?

The subconscious mind is a data-bank for everything, which is not in your conscious mind. It stores your beliefs, your previous experience, your memories, your skills. Everything that you have seen, done or thought is also there. It is also your guidance system. (Source)

Therefore if you have an unfavourable habit, thought or emotional pattern that isn’t serving you and you’re finding it extremely challenging to change this habit with your willpower, that is because you are trying to do the opposite of a program in your subconscious mind. It’s like using 5% of your mind against the other 95%. It’s not a fair battle.

New awareness or understanding of these unfavourable programs won’t automatically change them in your subconscious mind. You need to be patient and repeat the new belief or behaviour that you want to change all the time until it becomes your new go-to habit.

For example if you have the subconscious program of hitting the snooze button 5 times in the morning, getting out of bed stressed because you are worried about being late, skip breakfast and then binge on fast food later on, that is a habit that is not serving you.

In order to change it you must replace it with a new habit and repeat it until it becomes normal. You could focus on changing your morning routine so you get up the first time your alarm goes off, get ready for the day in a relaxed state, have time to meditate and make a nutritious breakfast.

However you can’t do this new routine once and expect the change to stick. If you want to change your subconscious responses you must repeat, repeat, repeat!

Another way to change your subconscious mind besides repetition is by utilizing hypnosis.

You may be wondering, is hypnosis real? And what even is hypnosis?

Here is a hypnosis definition from Merriam Webster Dictionary.

“Hypnosis is a trancelike state that resembles sleep but is induced by a person whose suggestions are readily accepted by the subject.”

I think of hypnosis as a fast track method of changing the beliefs and habits in your subconscious mind.

That is because when you are in a state of hypnosis your brain waves slow down from beta to alpha to theta state, which is when your subconscious mind is much more suggestible and open to rewriting old programs with new ones.

I’m excited that hypnosis is becoming more mainstream in the personal development world because I have personally experienced amazing effects when I worked with a hypnotherapist and I felt encouraged to get certified myself. Now hypnosis is part of my daily routine!

Hypnosis helps me visualize and feel the future I am creating and manifesting. Instead of creating more of the predictable past by thinking and feeling the same way each day, I am focused on creating a better and brighter future by visualizing and feeling that desired reality. I frequently listen to my own pre-recorded self hypnosis’ that are included in my online course Embodiment. (My favourites tracks are Quantum Leap Into Your Dream Life and Manifest Wealth & Abundance.)

A quote I love that summarizes the power of our subconscious mind is by Earl Nightingale - “Whatever we plant in our subconscious mind and nourish with repetition and emotion will one day become a reality.”

When you are led through a hypnosis in person by a certified instructor you will receive transformative results. But you can also do it yourself at home and as often as you’d like! If you get results from one session imagine how impactful your results are when you repeatedly think and feel about what you want to manifest into your life.

You can take action and hustle very hard towards your goals, however if your subconscious mind is not on board you will find it extremely difficult to make a change in your life.

So I encourage you to utilize the power of your subconscious mind and start incorporating techniques to change your habitual thoughts, emotions and actions.

Get your subconscious mind (95% of your mind) on board with the goals and desires of your conscious mind (the other 5%) and watch how things that used to be a struggle start to feel effortless!
